MILIA VS SYRINGOMAS

Image
I've been seeing a resurgence of milia and syringomas lately both in my practice and on the subway. It seems to go in waves with customers. Milia are the hard pearls on top of the skin usually located around the eyes and cheeks. Milia can be a combination or a collection of trapped oil, debris or bacteria that gets trapped on top of the pore versus inside of the pore making it very difficult to squeeze out. In fact, the only way to really get rid of Milia is professionally with a needle or by using a glycolic-based product and waiting a few weeks for it to naturally shed off. Attack it on your own and you risk scarring. The other day I saw "Almost Famous" actress Zoey Deschanel's bumpy eyes online on the Daily Mail , which reminded me I needed to do a Tues Tip about these bumps. Syringomas look similar to milia only perhaps a little flatter. Syringomas are supposed to be benign tumors or what I refer to as cholesterol bumps that form in the sweat glands. I observe the...

IS YOUR LIPSTICK MAKING YOU LOOK OLD?

Image
I LOVE it when people get experimental with makeup. That's what our teens and 20's are all about. However I'm a bit alarmed that the dark lip is making a comeback this season. Don't get me wrong, I love a dark lip. It can be mysterious, sultry and bold......if you're under 30. After Youtube star Michelle Phan posted her latest video on how to create the perfect dark lip I knew it was time to make sure I included a list of the do's and don'ts for lip color. Before I start the list I put together a photo sample of a neutral, bright and dark lip colors worn on the red carpet by 28 year old actress Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo). As you can see the dark lip color really emphasizes her smaller top lip. Her face also looks hard and sunken. The color really brings out her eyes, but at the cost other less appealing attributes. Mara's neutral lip really brings attention to her eyes. As much as I love the effect of a matte lip, she would have actual...

SKIN CANCER FROM DRY SKIN?

I just recently I had a chance to sit in on a lecture about dry skin, peptides and more at a beauty show held on the east coast. There was a lecture by Michael Pugliese of Circadia that really seemed to catch my attention. I like these lectures because what may seem like common knowledge to me makes perfect tuesday topic fodder for my blog. As I sat down to investigate other studies about the link between increased skin cancer risks and dry skin I ran across this awesome entry from the International Dermal Institute. CLICK THIS LINK to check out the anatomy of a wrinkle, skin discoloration, collagen breakdown and more. There wasn't much on the topic of dry skin and skin cancer in my research. Perhaps because it's just common sense? The moral of the story is dry skin is compromised skin that is not able to function properly. This makes us more prone to breakouts and other skin issues as well because dry skin is unable to protect itself. We also lose internal moist...
