Vitamins 101

Image
by mary schook There is a great amount of controversy surrounding vitamins and supplements. First of all our bodies only absorb up to 30% of the vitamin for many reasons. Out of that 30% you may not absorb any of it because you could be deficient in B12. What a pain on the liver that is! Supplements are made to supplement a diet that may be lacking in specific nutrition. If supplementation was bad the government wouldn't be fortifying our foods with vitamins and minerals. The problem is taking vitamins from companies you don't know about in the wrong dosage at the wrong time could be harming you more than helping you. I have provided a handy dandy link that will not only tell you what vitamins do, but where to get them. More examples like the one provided below can be found at WIKI by CLICKING HERE. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin. It can dissolve in water. It is one of the B-complex vitamins. The B complex includes: B1 B2 B6 pantothenic acid folic acid niacin biotin Vit...

eHow.com- REVERSING THINNING HAIR

Reversing Thinning Hair -- powered by ehow by mary schook This week I wanted to feature eHow.com . I'm glad I held off until now to talk about them because they just recently built up quite the extensive library. eHow.com takes questions that people search for on google and answers them with videos. While their presenters may not be the most animated or focused bunch (possibly because they do it solely for the exposure), I really like the content of the tips that they give. I know that hair loss is a big topic for both my men and women, which is why I chose this particular video to feature this week. Perhaps next week I will follow up with Biotin. By the way eHow.com doesn't just feature health and beauty. They cover literally everything from cooking to working on your car so do yourself a favor and pass this along to your family and friends as well. The great thing about eHow is you won't have to listen to a 2 minute preamble about unrelated material the way you may on y...

The Dreaded "S" Word...

Image
The Dreaded S Word It has long been a rumor that women who develop stretch marks either have to spend a great deal of money on products or procedures to reduce the appearance of their  stretch marks  or just live with the unattractive scars. Well the good news is there is a way that you can reduce or completely eliminate your stretch marks and you will see it today! So, hold on and here we go.  If you are anything like me, I dreaded them- and for good reasons! So, immediately after I found out I had some working on me, I set out to find out the truth about stretch marks and what I could do to avoid them. After weeding through a TON of information, it all pointed to one, very discouraging conclusion- they are unavoidable, especially if your skin type is prone to stretch marks (thanks dad). Not exactly what I wanted to hear- isnt there some magic potion or something? Well, one thing I also found is the famous saying "prevention is the best medicine" proves t...

PSORIASIS AND ECZEMA

Image
by mary schook The scaly skin conditions psoriasis and eczema are usually grouped together. Primarily they both reflect stress and immune/nervous system issues. They also reflect the declining quality of our diets in both enough essential fats and an accumulation of too many pesticides and hormones that the body can't handle. You can read more about the differences between the two skin conditions online here. 5% of the time if one has either psoriasis or eczema they also have rheumatoid arthritis. This makes it evident that the body is too acidic. Acid means inflammation. The goal is to reduce inflammation through organic, alkaline whole foods which can be found on this list. For some of my clients it's difficult for them to find alkaline foods on the go so they use alkaline drops in their beverages. FYI it also helps to prevent hangovers! Because eczema and psoriasis is a sign of an immune system issue light to moderate sun and saltwater is highly recommended. The vitamin...

HEAT AND AGING

Image
by mary schook For many years now I have been using cold or room temperature water instead of hot water on my clients (despite the minor protests). I explain to my clients that the main reason I do this is to calm inflammation and keep collagen and elastin intact. Cold also increases product penetration! My theory initially began years ago after watching my mother braise meat. When you braise meat you steam the meat to loosen up the collagen strands, which allows the meat to fall apart! I was also a lifeguard for many years and in the winters I would study the people who religiously went to the steam rooms at the facility where I was working. Their faces looked droopier to me when they came out of the steam room than before they had entered the room. It wasn't a relaxed face to me. Their faces looked like they had dropped ever so slightly over time. Because of 'droopy face' I was a pain when I got into esthetics school. I fought the system by stating I would not use steam i...
